Help Required...

Apart from this one, does anyone have any recommendations for a good book detailing the German viewpoint* on the Great War? Preferably covering the factual/historical land warfare side of the conflict. My collection of books plus everything I can find in my local library is (unsurprisingly) from the British/Commonwealth side.
* Please note I cannot read German (or any other language come to that)-so I need a book where someone has done all the hard work for me already!

Hello Matt,

Even though I was critical of his work in my review please do check out Holger Herwig's 'The Marne, 1914'. While in few respects I think its somewhat flawed, it does contain very valuable information/insight from the German perspective that was previously unavailable.

Great blog, btw!

Cheers,

Curt

Storm Of Steel by Ernst Junger is a really excellent account of his experiences in WWI on Western Front

Hi Matt - the only one I know of is Martin Middlebrook's "The Kaiser's Battle" - all about the last German offensive drawing on eyewitness accounts from both sides. I haven't read it for a long time but I think it was pretty good.

Ian-I had forgotten I have the Middlebrook book-that is next on my (re-)reading list.

Curt-I will definitely be looking at Herwigs book-the 1914 campaign is highest on the interest list!

Sarge-thanks, never heard of this book so thanks for the heads up.

Manfred von Richtofen's biography is a good read as is The German High Command in World War I by Robert B. Asprey, which pretty much tells the story of Hindenburg and Ludendorff

Rommel's account of being an infantry commander in WWI has been translated and is available. I haven't read it bit its on "my list". It might deal largely with the later war though.

hoi,

I'm currently reading this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-German-Army-Ypres-1914/dp/1848841132/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334554552&sr=8-1

and it's filled to the brim with German eyewitness accounts you should really get it!

Also Copse 125 by Ernst Junger, it's not as good as Storm of Steel but worth a read.

Bit late with this but have you tried Through German Eyes: The British and the Somme by Christopher Duffy?
